    Excel 2010 - macro set to refresh just one pivot table but is refreshing all

    Hello: I have some code that runs and loops through each pivot table to refresh it;
    however, I remmed out the code so that it only loops once - telling it to refresh the first pivot;
    the thing I'm confused about is that after the code runs, it appears to have refreshed all my pivots.
    I think it's also important to note the each pivot table is linked to the same data source. (an external ds)

    Maybe when this is the case, refresh will always refresh all?

    Not sure but was hoping someone might know.

    Thanks,
    Proctor

    Using the same source for all pivot is not an issue here...

    When you create multiple pivots using same source then when creating a pivot table with the same source (Not Initially) will ask you whether this can be picked from another pivot which was already created with the same source which you are trying to create now to use lesser memory.

    So if you choose Yes then those pivots are tied as a one union and refreshing a pivot will refresh all the tied pivots too...

    So create a new one by selecting No.

    Hi,
    As a matter of fact I have a strong feeling that such popup appeared in older versions.
    In Excel 2010 it no longer appears.
    One could try to go through whole pivot creator (3 step) to have separate pivot caches -
    @proctorar: see for example:
    http://www.excelforum.com/excel-char...-grouping.html but I am not sute if with external data you will have effect of independent refreshing this way - try and let us know.
    Best Regards,

    Kaper

    Hi Kaper,

    Thanks for joining in

    But I have tested it in 2010 by creating multiple PT using the same base and excel prompted me with that type of message to make the PT memory lesser.

    Good to hear that, because I tried some time ago (but on data in the same workbook), and remember it didn't appear.

    Thank you both for your replies - great information.

    When I create a new pivot table using the same external data source, I don't get that prompt. In fact, I've never seen it before sixthsense mentioned it.
    I wonder if it doesn't apply when working with external data sources.

    I'm going to try to see if I can work through Kaper's example to separate out the caches...

    Thanks again for your inputs.
