how to change the names of the x values on the x axis without really changing the data

I have a step graph that ive created using dates of years. if i dont use years for the x axis (a date format), then i lose the steps. so im forced to use years

problem is, i dont want to use years. its a cover up. the real data is something else.

so the graph looks great, its just that i need to change the names of the x axis data without actually changing the data

ive provided an example sheet to elucidate.

The problem is your x values are text.

This works with your example data but may not with real data. Use dates displayed in mm/_dd format.
You can add another series to fake the axis labels.

hey thanks for helping out. not sure im seeing the point of the fake axis labels. could you expand on that?

and the thing is my real x axis data doesnt consist of dates at all. so im boned right?

Without the fake labels the axis will display information that is meaningless in explaining your example data.

I don't know whether the data you posted is real or example. How would you expect the value 10_20 to be plotted? That is not a number but text.

Perhaps you need to take a step back and explain exactly what your data is and how it should be plotted.

right i dont want the value 10_20 to be plotted, its text. i want to create a step chart without using dates if thats possible.

    No built in step chart.

You can use error bars on a xy-series

If you include a dummy series as line you can then have the textual axis labels included.
