I want a scatter graph with Date plotted on the X Axis and data on the Y like so:

However, I also want to include a further column in the data so I can identify a point on hover, like so:
scatter2.jpg
My data looks like this:
scatterdata.jpg
How does one combine the two?
Either you will have to alter your data layout. In order to get the text to appear it needs to be the series name.
Or you can alter the number format.
I doubt either will be suitable for your actual data set.

The custom number format is nifty- do you know if there is a limit to how many number formats I can add / can be applied to a sheet?
The alternative data layout is where I'd got to using a Pivot Chart and a line graph with just points rather than lines - the problem is that this tops out at 255 series and I've got about 5,000 companies.
I think the limit is a memory one, which is not very helpful.
Another drawback with the pivot table approach is the Category axis is text rather than date.
Not looking good this is it?
I can live with the axis being text since all the data is rounded to months anyway, not that it matters since the number of series nukes it anyway.

Only other approach is a vba solution to provide your own hover label. But that just creates a whole different set of problems and limitations.
