how to expand the surface chart?

    hello!

was wondering if anyone knows how i can "expand" the surface chart? sorry, i don't even know if that's the right word for it.

basically, if you look at the attached chart, the legend has:

    600-800
    400-600
    200-400
    0-200

    2015-10-21_0817.png

is there a way i can make it into increments of 50 - so it'll be:

    750-800
    700-750
    650-700
    ..
    .
    ..
    50-100
    0-50

    thank you kindly!
    excel is awesome

Re: how to expand the surface chart?

Short, optimistic, but useless answer: Yes, I am optimistic that there is a way to further subdivide your divisions.

A picture certainly cannot subdivide the larger divisions into smaller divisions. An Excel chart, by itself, cannot subdivide the division. The way to do this will be to subdivide the larger divisions in the spreadsheet. Exactly what this will look like will depend on your exact spreadsheet layout and the algorithm you want to use to subdivide the data. The overall process will look something like
    1) You have a table/list with the current data
    2) Start a new table list
    3) Add a category for 750-800
    4) Add formula(s) to extract from the original data table the value that should go into the 750-800 category.
    5) Add a category for 700-750
    6) Repeat formulas to extract the data from the original data table that should into this category.
    7) Repeat until you have filled the new table with the desired data -- If you pay careful attention to the formulas created in 4, this should be a simple copy and paste operation.
    8) Create chart based on new table.

IMO, the hardest part of this is step 4 -- what algorithm will you want to use to further subdivide the data and how shall we implement that algorithm in the spreadsheet?

Re: how to expand the surface chart?

    thanks for the response.

i'm sorry, i should have mentioned that this is generated by a pivot table.

the chart you see above is simply a pivot chart. attached is the pivot table settings:

is there a setting i'm not aware to manually set the increments?

the legend is the sum of the duration for the given day of week and time of day, so i can't just separate it out...

    thank you for helping.

Re: how to expand the surface chart?

Unfortunately, I am barely aware that pivot tables exist, so I am not proficient in what a pivot table can and cannot do. I will see if I can put this to others who are more proficient in using pivot tables. In the meantime, it would probably be useful to upload a sample workbook rather than pictures that include a sample of what your source data looks like for the pivot table (randomized and desensitized with dummy data if needed). I expect that, in order for anyone to provide specific help, they will need to know what your source data table looks like and how you are asking the pivot table to summarize the source data.
