Cannot get Excel to properly format a date time graph

    Hi,

I have created a simple set of data like this:

    A B C D E F Average
    19-Jun 00:00:05 00:00:06 00:00:06 00:00:16 00:00:05 00:00:08
    26-Jun 00:00:04 00:00:03 00:00:03 00:00:11 00:00:11 00:00:06
    03-Jul 00:00:04 00:00:03 00:00:03 00:00:08 00:00:14 00:00:06 00:00:06
    10-Jul 00:00:04 00:00:04 00:00:04 00:00:15 00:00:05 00:00:06
    17-Jul 00:00:03 00:00:03 00:00:03 00:00:21 00:00:08
    24-Jul 00:00:04 00:00:03 00:00:04 00:00:14 00:00:06
    31-Jul 00:00:04 00:00:03 00:00:03 00:00:10 00:00:05
    07-Aug 00:00:04 00:00:03 00:00:03 00:00:12 00:00:05

I want to graph the dates in the first column on the left as the x-axis, and the calculated average from the column on the right. Seems simple enough but I cannot get this to format correctly. The axes are the wrong way around and the dates are not recognised, and I only get one value for the x-axis, like this:

    graphproblem.jpg

I have tried various suggested solution about changing the date to text etc. but this is not helping me. If I don't use time formats (hh:mm:ss) in the column on the right and instead just type in ordinary number values then it works. But there must be a way to keep the formatting I want and get the graph displayed as I want.

    Can anyone offer any advice?

    Thank you

    Paul.

It would help if you attached a sample Excel workbook.

To do this, click on Go Advanced (below the Edit Window) while you are composing a reply, then scroll down to and click on Manage Attachments and the Upload window will open. Click on Browse and navigate to (and double-click) the file icon that you want to attach, then click on Upload and then on Close this Window to return to the Edit window. When you have finished composing your post, click on Submit Post.

Please note that the Paperclip icon (Attachments button) does not work on this Forum.

    Hope this helps.

    Pete

Thanks Pete... I did try that first but didn't know about this process. Hopefully it's now attached.

Your sample file did not include your attempts at the chart, so it is difficult to know what you did wrong. Here's what I did:

    1) I selected A2:A9 (ctrl) H2:H9
    2) Insert -> line chart -> any regular line chart. I got something very similar to your picture in post 1.
    3) Roll my eyes and grumble under breath because, once again, Excel completely misunderstood my desired source data ranges. (this step is optional, you don't need to roll your eyes or grumble in order to get this to work).
    4) Go into the Select Source data dialog and:
4a) Select the one data series and edit the ranges so that there is nothing in the "name" field and the "values" field is pointing to H2:H9.
4b) Select "edit" above the horizontal category axis data and point this field to A2:A9.
    5) Other formatting as desired.

I have found -- especially since I upgraded to 2007 when MS did away with the chart wizard -- that I am frequently using the Select Source Data dialog to fix Excel's faulty guesses that it makes on chart creation.

Re: Cannot get Excel to properly format a date time graph

Thank you... thank you... thank you. I had spent more time rolling my eyes and grumbling quite loud. Fortunately the family are away and I'm on my own today!

That was very useful because I understand more about how these settings work now working through your process than I ever did before.

    Thanks again.
