    Graphing Select Data

I have a data set tied to dates from 2017-2019. I wish to create a graph that displays the 2017 data, 2018 data, and 2019 data by MONTH (ie all January data together and all February data together... ) while distinguishing the 3 sets of data by color. Basically, wanting to see trends and how monthly production changes year to year.

If this is not possible, is it possible to create three separate graphs for the data? I can do both manually, but my boss wants it to be a formula so that as data is updated/added the graph automatically updates.

    Re: Graphing Select Data

Details obviously depend on exactly what you currently have.

My first thought would be to use a pivot table (assuming your source data is in a good database format). Dates (grouped by month after the pivot table is created) would be the row labels, "data sets" would be the column labels, and whatever summary value goes in the value field. The pivot table would then be filtered by the three years of interest (if the raw data has more years). Create the desired chart from the pivot table data, and the chart should show the things you want, and should follow changes to the pivot table as they happen.

If your boss will not accept a pivot table solution, then it's a matter of doing all of the same things that a pivot table does, but with formulas. Ultimately, the goal of the formulas is to build a table similar to a pivot table, where you have dates (grouped by month) down the left side of the table, the identifiers for "data sets" across to top row of the table, and a SUMIFS(), COUNTIFS(), or other summary function in the main body of the table. If your source data is arranged well and you pay attention to relative and absolute references, you should be able to enter the summary formula once and copy/paste/fill into the rest of the table. Then build the chart off of this table.

Which approach do you want to use? What difficulties do you encounter implementing that approach?

THANK YOU SOO MUCH!! This worked!

I went the Pivot Table route. I will check with my boss but I think this method displays the data in a useful manner.
