    Excel auto-complete of long column

    Hi,

I have a large dataset and i would like to find a method that auto fills the cells in the column.
For example if you have a column:

    1
    2
    3
    4
    554
    454
    344

I would like to select the 4 top cells and select the auto-fill and drag the selected range down to the last bottom cell so that each cell has a numerical value that's 1 higher than the previous cell. I can do this with my cursor but it takes a lot of time. Is there a faster way to do this, maybe with shortkeys?

    Any input is much appreciated!

    Select the top two cells.
Hover the mouse over the bottom right corner of the second cell till it changes to a cross-hair
    Double click on the cross-hair.
    Done.

    1. Select the column and hit delete.
    2. Type 1 into A1.
    3. Go to Home | Fill | Series ...
    4. Select columns and type 1048576 as the stop value, then OK out.

EDIT: Just FYI, the crosshair solution offered above does not work for me in Office 365.

@Ali: Works for me in Office 365 ? However, it only replaces the existing values, whereas your solution fills every row down to row 1048576. But why would you want to populate over a million (empty) rows? I DID assume that the OP only wanted to replace the existing data ...

Maybe because I interpreted this differently:

and drag the selected range down to the last bottom cell
Dragging to 500 would not take long.
