Having trouble with a line chart displaying properly

    Dear Forum,

I am having trouble getting a line chart to show proper movement in a Rate of Return graph regarding S&P performance. I can't help but believe it is a simple fix, but I cannot find the problem.
I have attached the file that I am working on showing the line graph display I am currently getting. The vertical axis should be from 10% to -10% at 2% intervals. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    The test file is attached.

Thank you so much. I didn't think to try the bar chart. This will work, and again thanks for your rapid response and solution to my problem.

Yes TMS, this looks like what I want it to look like. What was I doing wrong on the original file? Can you share that to reinforce how much of a dummy I am on charting?
Thanks so much for your help on correcting my error.

In all honesty, I don't know. I couldn't work out how to edit the chart you had.

I started from scratch. I selected all the data including the column headers. So, from A3 to B39. I then Inserted a new Line Chart from the Chart options ribbon. And, finally, I right clicked on the axis and edited the lower and upper bounds.

I don't think you are a dummy. I often struggle setting up charts. That said, I don't know what you did to get what you got.

Your original chart type was 100% stacked with markers.

Andy, do the place markers affect the creation of the chart? If so, how should I proceed to get rid of them. The chart is working fine now with assistance I received here in the forum, but I am not completely up to speed on why they work.
Perhaps some additional insight on how to remove the markers will make it easier for the line graph to be generated. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

NO data markers do not make a difference.
Right click chart and pick Chart Type.
There are variations of line chart with and without markers.

Or select the series line and via the format pane set the data marker to none

Thanks. The problem I was having was because I didn’t lock the cells when I totaled the yearly results. After I locked the cells in the three sections every thing worked fine. Thank you for your help on this. It is much appreciated.
