Plotting curves showing less points than actually used

    Hi

I am new around here and I am need of help, I need to make plots that are based on a large number of points.
However, I need also to be able to present them in a format suitable for black and white printing. So to differntiate
between curves I will have to something like this

As you can see, the person who made this plot used much more points than he is actually showing, is there a way of
doing that in excel or any other program?

Thank you, your help is much appreciated.

Yes, this can be done in Excel. Here's I usually see this sort of thing happening:

    1) Decide on a form the best fit curve, or decide how you want to interpolate/extrapolate. This is probably the hardest part of a question like this, and it really isn't an Excel question, or a question specific to the programming language or application you are using. You have to know enough about your data and the math behind the curve you want to draw to decide what those curves should look like. Without more information, I'm not sure I can provide much more input on this step.

    2) Once you have decided how you want to interpolate/extrapolate/curve fit the data, then you can program the regression/interpolation/extrapolation into Excel at any number of points over whatever range you want in another table.

    3) Then plot the curves and format as desired

Thank you MrShorty for your reply, I knew when I was writing that I didn't
make myself clear, so I am sorry because that resulted in you not understanding
    the question.

    Let me have another try.

I have a few sets that need to plotted together, each set contains a very large
number of points (usually in the tens of thousands), now when I plot the graph
with these sets and I want which curve is for which set I need to either plot
them in colour coded graphs or using a marked line or marked scatter curves.

However If I use these curves There would be so many points that are next to each
other that I would now which curve is which, so I am looking for a way in which
I only select a small number of points to plot like the graph I added as an
    attachment to the first post.

    Thank you

In that case, I would start with this (not really Excel specific) question: How will you determine which points to plot? For example, If you have 10,000 sorted, somewhat evenly spaced data points, it might be easy enough to plot every 1000th data point.

Once you've decided which data points you want to plot, use Excel's lookup functions and extract those data points from the main table into another table. Then use this table to plot the series that will be for the markers.
