Can you make half of your y axis log scale?

    Hello all-

Strange request... I am making a bar graph.. in a nutshell, the y axis intercept is set to 1 and all other bars are compared to the first control bar, which is set to 1 based on the analysis.

However, based on the analysis, the scale below one must be log scale, while the scale above one is normal.

Is there any way to do this?

    Thanks

The only thing I could think of would be to create a line chart and set up your x data points to represent a log scale for the first part and then change to linear..

Have a look at the attachment, although I just guessed at what the x-axis labels should be, it's not a "proper" log.

I have attached an example.... You will see that everything is compared to the first column. The y axis is fold change. However, anything below 0 is a log change, while everything above is regular.... I need to find a way to make the lower part log scale to indicate the differences...

It's not exactly clear to me what you want, but it seems like, one way or another, what you are going to want is Jon Peltier's "arbitrary axis" technique. Probably something very similar to a reciprocal axis like he describes here: http://peltiertech.com/Excel/Charts/RecipAxisChart.html Obviously, what you want will apply to the y axis rather than the x axis, and you will need to a two stage equation (one for the linear portion of the axis and one for the logarithmic portion), but you should be able to accomplish what you want using these techniques.

Re: Can you make half of your y axis log scale?

To be clearer... I just need all y axis values >1 to appear as they are but all y axis values <1 to be log scale.

Since the y axis is n-fold difference.. increasing or decreasing, the values below 1 are underestimated, since .1 is really a 10 fold decrease, not a 1 fold decrease.

So, some way to log scale <1 values on the x axis.

So, using the arbitrary axis technique explained by Jon, the formula for y in your "dummy" axis (you will also need a similar transformation for the raw y-data) will be something like =IF(y>=1,y,log(y)) (Assuming you want a base-10 log, if you want some other base, adjust the log() part of the formula accordingly). Add, format, and label the dummy axis as described in Jon's tutorials, and you should have something pretty close to what you want.
