MaxIf without an array

I am looking for a formula that will do a MaxIf without an array formula. This link http://www.excelforum.com/tips-and-t...ml#post3676901 is exactly what I thought I needed but I can't seem to get it to work based on information in the reference cells that are index and match functions. Any help is appreciated.
