Conditional formatting with reference, not value

    Hi there
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to set up conditional formatting in a cell that has a value in it that comes from another cell in another sheet in a workbook, i.e. instead of having a number in the cell, such as 25, the cell has '=Sheet1!A4 which has the number in it.? I've searched for ways to do this but can't find anything.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

hi datafiend. the short answer is yes. especially if you are using Excel 2010 & above, it is much easier. if you are comparing the current sheet's B1 with Sheet1!A4 for eg, select the range you want to apply to (say from B1:B10)
go to Home -> Conditional Formatting -> New Rule -> Use a formula to determine which cells to format -> Format values where this formula is true:
    =B1=Sheet1!$A$4

so B1:B10 will be compared to A4. remove the dollar signs to compare downwards (A5, A6, etc)

Thanks, if you have clicked on the * and added our rep.
