    Using INDIRECT to search a closed file

    Hi all,
    I recently posted here about doing a LOOKUP combined with a INDIRECT to look on multiple colunms (solved) but now i need to perform a similar task acros more than one file.

    A1 B1 C1
    1900 S:\Folder\Takeway\[Food FY15 WK1.xlsx]WK1'!$C$52 #REF!

    A1 = Desired cell figure (using ='S:\Folder\Takeaway\[Food FY15 WK1.xlsx]WK1'!$C$52)
    But when i use C2 to INDIRECT search B1 for the exact same text it returns #REF!

    What am i doing wrong?

    AFAIK, the file needs to be open for INDIRECT to function, not closed.

    For a similar project I used INDIRECT.EXT and had to install an add in to excel on the machines that needed to use the file

    Re: Using INDIRECT to search a closed file

    Ive got it to work with the external file open.

    C1: =INDIRECT(B1)
    B1: ="'[Food FY15 WK1.xlsx]WK1'!$C$52"

    Im guessing its just a matter of getting it to format. but i would love to be able to use closed file . Ill look into this add in, thanks for that nigelog

    Ah, yes, I think the first single quote mark (') will just cause the content of the cell to be treated as text, thus getting lost.

    I think the Add-in is going to be your best bet.
