    Formula to retrieve common phrases/words.

    Hi,

I am looking at doing a piece of work that enables me to identify most common phrases/words.

IE; cell A1:A50 consist of random text strings:

    A1 red cat
    A2 blue cow
    A3 etc etc.
    A5 golf club
    A6 golf caddy

I am looking to find a formula that will search the workbook and provide me with insight into the 'top 5 phrases/words'.

This scenario would return "golf" and "etc"

    Can someone provide a solution?

    Thanks,
    Martin

How many "words" can there be in each cell?

    Hi Glenn,

Thank you for such a swift response.

Each cell may contain up to 30 words (ie a sentence/comment)

    Many Thanks,
    Martin

Argghhh. If I'd seen your comment before I started fiddling with this....

In short, without VBA, I think this is nigh on impossible. I'm hopeless with VBA, so I'm out. this is what i had been working on; but as you can see with only 8 words in my example, it's already truly horrible!! Still... it kept me occupied for a good while...

    Any VBA gurus out there??

    Hi Glenn,

Thanks for this - your formula seems great. I think my request isn't quite straight forward (my apologies). It is simply that I have a range of data with IE; customer comments.

I would like to pick out common phrases/words. Maybe I am little naive to think a good old =MODE would do the trick! :D

    Many Thanks,
    Martin
