Sumif for inconsistent column headings across multiple sheets

Hi, I'm new around here, but tried to make sure this particular question hadn't been asked yet. Please point me elsewhere if I missed something!

Anyways, I've got a about a Worksheet with about 15 individual sheets, each of which follows a general formatting. I've also got a "Totals" sheet setup to collect some basic info from those sheets. But I'd also like to create something a little more specialized & having a hard time. In the rows I've got a bunch of categories which remain constant across each sheet. Each sheet has a nearly identical column formatting with one exception. There are a series of columns which will show income from different sources (A,B,C, etc...); In my "Totals" sheet, I want to be able to collect totals for each income source, across all 15 sheets. But in each sheet these sources will differ, and any give source could appear in multiple sheets. I'd like to avoid listing all of the possible sources on each sheet, which means that any given column heading will not always appear in the same column on each sheet. SO Here's my question: Using sumifs, or some other function, can I select the row which contains the column headings as the range1, the particular source name ("A", "B", "C") as the criteria, and then set range2 to sum the values in any column matching the heading name? I've tried this sumif(Sheet1:Sheet15!5:5,"A",J7:J30) but turning up value errors. Sort of stuck... Thanks for taking a look, and happy to clarify if needed!

Hi, welcome to the forum

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook. The workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.

To attach a file to your post,
click advanced (next to quick post),
scroll down until you see "manage file",
click that and select "add files" (top right corner).
click "select files" find your file, click "open" click "upload" click 'done" bottom right. click "submit reply"

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
