Locking cell for copying but enabling users to see the content/formulas

    Hi guys,

I'd have one question for you.

Does anybody know if it is possible to protect certain cells in the sheet for copying it, but still be able to see the content of the cells/formulas?

Just to make sure somebody cannot select and copy over the entire sheet, but still can understand what formulas/functions the workbook contains.

    Thank you for any idea!

If you right click on the cell(s) in question you will notice the protection format should default to locked. The box below for hidden should be unchecked which means that even when protected the user can view the result and the formula behind it but cannot copy or amend the cell.

This protection only comes into play when you protect the sheet, at this point you want to allow users to select locked and unlocked cells.

Does this achieve what you are asking?

Just filling in a bit on PFDave's comment:

Cell properties are, by default, set to "Locked" and "Unhidden". Unless you or someone else has changed these properties there is little need to select and right click the range of cells - won't hurt to check the cell protection settings though just to verify no changes from the default.

You only just need to click the Ribbon Menu > Review > Protect Sheet. Password is optional - you can protect the sheet without entering a password but experienced users may know how to check and turn off sheet protection.

Sheet Protection, by default, is set to allow users to select both locked and unlocked cells. Allowing them select the locked cells permits them to view the formula in the formula bar but prevents users from making edits to the cell.

If there are cells in the sheet for which you want to allow users to make edits then you must make sure to change the cell protection property from locked to unlocked.
