    Assistance Trending/Forecasting Data

    Good Evening!

I am in the process of trending or forecasting sales data for a project at work. I have been asked to determine, on our current trajectory where we will end the year in 4 different sales categories. The information I have to make my determinations is monthly totals for each of the categories I need to trend or forecast out to years end in December. Since I did this "wrong" the last time, I figured I would reach out to the experts on this forum (as I was recommended by a friend!)

Like most I am behind the 8 ball a bit with this so any help is GREATLY appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Tom

Since I did this "wrong" the last time,
What was the "wrong" method you used last time? If they declared the previous method/algorithm "wrong", that must mean someone on your end has an idea of the "right" way to do this. I'm not sure we can even start to help you program this without knowing the "right" algorithm you (or someone on your end) wants to use.

I essentially annualized the data to forecast the remaining months I needed. I should also note that I have historical data for each of the 4 sales categories for the last 6 years

like MrShorty said without knowing what is "wrong" i cant really tell what is "right"

anyway using some general assumptions on what you probably are after (based on non seasonal sales..seasonal is another kettle of fish)

trend is projected both in data form and graph on attached file

    Re: Assistance Trending/Forecasting Data

I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but I was able to open the file provided and see the series of data trended in data and in graph form. What formula do I use to trend my data in data for July-December? Do I use the historical values for each month for the last 6 years?

    Thank you for the reply!

    Go to Year 6
    the formula contained is
    Formula: copy to clipboard

the graph has a trend line feature, i was just mimicking what it does in formula (hence why the trend line and formula overlap)

    Re: Assistance Trending/Forecasting Data

So the values for one of the sales categories I need to forecast resides in cell C38, F38, I38, L38, and O38. I need forecasted values for R38 (June), U38 (July), X38 (August), AA38 (September), AD38 (October), AG38 (November), and AJ38 (December)

    Re: Assistance Trending/Forecasting Data

you need to format your data so it works with the formula
or have the trend run on separate sheet (like the attached example) to have it retrieved onto your front page via formulas

^if this doesnt make sense then i suggest you create a dummy worksheet with your layout (with expected outcomes) and we can see how we can achieve what you want based on the format you have
