    Question Incremental increase formula

In cell A1 I have the number $10,000. In cell A2, representing January, I'll place a starting number, example $250 (this number is subject to change). In cells B2 through B12 will be cells representing February through December. I wish the months to increase incrementally throughout the year to total cell A1. Is there a formulas that might give me the results I'm looking for?

    Regards

    Re: Incremental increase formula

In B2 =PMT(0,12,A2,A1). This would be the monthly amount that you would need to add to arrive at 10,000, assuming a zero interest rate.

    Re: Incremental increase formula

    Thanks greatly Alan.

    I'm off somewhere returning a negative -854.17.

You're correct that there is no interest involved. These are sales numbers January through December, with a lower number in January and increasing incrementally through December resulting in a total of $10,000.

Any thoughts where I might be off?

    Re: Incremental increase formula

I don't understand. The formula result says that you need to accumulate $854.17 each month Feb through Dec to reach $10,000 after having $250 for Jan.

This is how I interpreted your request.

Here is a goal seek scenario attached.

    Re: Incremental increase formula

Got it Alan. Thanks for the Excel example.

Ideally the monthly increases would incrementally increase each month. January would be the lowest amount, February more than January, March more than February and so on until December being the highest number but still totaling 10,000 for the entire year.

Is there anything we can add to your spreadsheet to get those increasing increments?

    Re: Incremental increase formula

Yup. Rethought this out. In cell B3, type = B2*$D$2 and copy down. Then use the goal seek as shown below.

    Re: Incremental increase formula

Alan, I know this is it. Hate to continue pestering you, but doing something incorrect. When I push OK on goal seek a pop up says the cell must contain a formula. Do I put anything in B2 or anything in D2? Is the 10000 in A1 simply the number 10,000. Thank you for your patience and expertise Alan.

same as in the sheet I attached
    In B2 =$A$2*(1+$D$2)

    Re: Incremental increase formula

Alan, I feel slow. Would you mind sending the spreadsheet again with all the formulas you've used. I still get a pop up of the cell needs a formula. Again thank you for your patience and professionalism.
