    Merging Cells with Vlookup

    Hello,

I am almost done making my excel sheet that I've been working on for 2 weeks. When I'm going through finishing the design of the worksheet I keep running into a very frustrating problem. I have a cell that uses Vlookup to pull data from another sheet. The cell is C5 that has the data in it, but I'm trying to merge it from C5:G5. When I merge and center the text that the formula displays disappears. I've tried moving the cell and that doesn't seem to work either. To add to the frustration, I can't get the border to show up on the right side of G5 either. Does anybody have any experience on trying to fix this? Thanks!

Any chance we could see the file? Desensitize anything confidential but make sure it's still representative of the actual data types.

Here is the file. If you look on the tab labeled MEC at the top next to business description where it says “sporting goods stores” that is where I’m having my issues.

    Thanks

So, I've been playing with it some, and I'm seeing that the sheet that its referencing is having the same issue.

Your data in column D on the Database sheet has MANY trailing spaces after it and that is causing the issue.

    Try this formula:
    Formula: copy to clipboard
    =TRIM(VLOOKUP($C$4,Database!A2:I670,4,FALSE))

As for the border on the right of G5, I cannot replicate that issue. It shows on my system but I'm guessing the two issues are related so solve one and you solve the other.

    Hope that helps.

Trailing spaces just means space characters at the end of text. Because they're spaces they're not immediately obvious. Select any cell with data in column D of the Database sheet then press the F2 key. You'll see the cursor is not right after the visible text but waaaay over to the right. That gap between text and cursor is the trailing spaces.
