    Weighted Average with Multiple Variables

Hey everyone, new here to the forum.

Have a question regarding weighted averages.
I have 5 Variables to consider that will determine the overall score. I will give hypothetical values to use as examples.

1st 95% (holds 80% of total score) - this is a percentage value and of course the higher the percentage the more positive the impact should be on the overall score

2nd 2 points (5% of total score) - these points should negatively effect the overall score
3rd 1 point (5% of total score) - these points should negatively effect the overall score
4th 3 points (5% of total score) - these points should negatively effect the overall score

5th 10 Points (5% of total score) - these points should positively effect the overall score

I want these 5 variables to determine the final score.
    Thoughts?

Re: Weighted Average with Multiple Variables

    Details are little vague.

Here's generic methodology that you can use to decide weight of each and how it should impact overall.

First lets assume perfect score overall is 100.
Then you should decide on weight of each of 5 section.
    In your case, 80, 5, 5, 5, 5.

Then from Max/Best score for each, you calculate percentage for each.

    1st is 95%, so you can multiply 80 * 95% = 76
2nd to 5th you haven't given much info for me, so I'll make some assumptions.
2nd - Assuming worst score is 5 (i.e. 0%), then 2 pts equates to 2/5 taken away from overall portion.
    =5 * (5-2)/5 = 5 - 2 = 3
    3rd & 4th then... 4 & 2 respectively.

5th, assume 10 is max score. Then...
    = 5 * 10/10 = 5
    So overall score is...
    =(76 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 5) / 100 = 90%
?Progress isn't made by early risers. It's made by lazy men trying to find easier ways to do something.?

You assumed correctly. and this is basically exactly what I have done I guess I was just doubting my methods lol
Thank you very much for your quick response!

Re: Weighted Average with Multiple Variables

    Hi,
First of all I would like to thank you both of you for sharing this excellent details.
As I got the perception that you are master in this kind of mathematical challenges, I ask your help for a very similar challenge: after making an online survey available, I intend to implement the calculation of a user satisfaction index (0 - 100) for users to respond, composed only by 3 possible evaluations (Positive, Neutral or Negative).
The point is that the number of users who choose to answer / rate or not is always unpredictable, which can be 10 on any given day and 1000 or 500 or 20000 on another day.
If possible, I would also like to assign different weights to each of the evaluations, something like this: Positive = 1; Neutral = 0; Negative = -1.
Can you help me with the right formula to implemente it (and if possible with excel formula).
Thank you very much in advanced for you support.
    BR,
    JB
