    Question about generating unique numbers

    Hello,

Im trying to make a spreadsheet that will generate a unique identifier based on user selected drop downs.

My problem is when I have to attach a 4 digit number to the preceeding qualifiers.

    What I want to do

SSTAMXXXX, I know how to generate the SSTAM, it could be PTUBCXXXX or any variation of the first 4 letters. (These 4 letters are generated by the user selected drop downs)

What I want is to attach XXXX either a random 4 digit number or sequential 4 digit number (Whatever is easier) that I can concatenate to the end of the first 4 letters.

Afterwards I want the entire string SSTAMXXXX to check with a column of existing SSTAMXXXX to verify that the whole string is unique and doesnt exist already in the column. And if it does exist to generate a new random number, or a new number in sequence)

Or if you have another idea of how I can accomplish this. I have 0VBA experience and was just using helper columns in excel.

Re: Question about generating unique numbers

It would help if you attached a sample Excel workbook, so we can see what your sheet looks like.

To do this, click on Go Advanced (below the Edit Window) while you are composing a reply, then scroll down to and click on Manage Attachments and the Upload window will open. Click on Browse and navigate to (and double-click) the file icon that you want to attach, then click on Upload and then on Close this Window to return to the Edit window. When you have finished composing your post, click on Submit Post.

Don't try to use the Paperclip icon for attachments, as it doesn't work on this forum.

    Hope this helps.

    Pete

Re: Question about generating unique numbers

    Hi Thanks,

I uploaded my work book. Please look at Sheet 2. Under the column NUMBER HERE I want to a number to be generated there so that it can concatenate under the Drawing Number column with the entire string. However I also want to make sure that Drawing Number is unique and if it isnt unique to generate a new number.

Basically at the end of the day I want the entire Drawing Number to be unique.
