Question Some sort of lookup formula that looks at multiple rows and returns a result?

    Hi,

I am unsure of the function that I'm looking for so will try to describe what I need.

From the example attached, Joe Smith has had at least one of his parents/contacts, read a message sent to them, so he can be ignored, but both Jane Peters and Ben Sullivan have none of their parents/contacts read the message. What I need is for either a new list made up that would have had Jane Peters and Ben Sullivan or at least another column at the end that would say "Yes" or something for one of their rows.

With 1200 rows, it would definitely make things easier if I didn't have to look down through every line etc.

Hope this makes sense. Did initially explain in more detail but thought people may not read it!

    Thanks in advance, Paul.

Re: Some sort of lookup formula that looks at multiple rows and returns a result?

    Hi,

Thanks for your prompt, this works for me on the sample I provided but when I copy it across to the live spreadsheet and update the cell references, I get TRUE for every row. Originally I thought it was because there were children with the same first name and last name but when I switched it to look at the first name and dob instead (Another collum on the live spreadsheet, which in theory should be unique to that child) it didn't change anything.

Thinking that I could have been being thick, I've done a search online and their examples have the criteria after the 1/ in brackets and also another that has the divide symbols replaced with multiply as follows (none of which work):

Please Login or Register to view this content.
Essentially on the live one, the B column contains first names (text), the E column contains DoB (date - DD/MM/YYYY) and the W column is where the "Yes"'s are.

I appreciate that not uploading a full sample sheet is a pain but it's just too complex to trim down. I have entered a DoB column into another sample and uploaded it, this works as we'd expect... When the formula is updated and copied to the real one, doesn't?!

    Thanks, Paul

Unfortunately, providing further sample data that does not cause the formula to fail gets us no closer to resolving the issue. You MUST include some rows that will cause it to fail.

It's a bit like presenting yourself to A&E before you break your leg ... Not possible to diagnose the fracture or its cause!!!

I appreciate that, the spreadsheet just kept behaving odd when stripping out the extra columns.

I think Excel was having a funny few mins as I've reapplied the original formula that bebo021999 provided and it worked!

    Thanks both!
