    Columns position within one row

    Hi everyone,

I have the following problem: Lets say I have one row from A2:D2 and only one cell is filled, I then need to know column in which the value is in.

I uploaded the idea as an image and a possible use-case.

    Hope you get my problem.

    Thank you in advance!

Re: Columns position within one row

Your first two examples just have the appropriate heading in column F, whereas the third example (of multiple values) has both the headings and the values. Which is it to be (for consistency) ?

By the way, it would help us (to not have to type out your data) if you attached a sample Excel workbook, rather than a picture of one. The yellow banner at the top of the screen gives details of how to do this.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Pete,

I attached the example Excel file (see original thread).

I can add the values on my own, so it is more important for me to get heading back as result from the cell/cells that is/are filled.

    THanks,

I appreciate that this is probably a made-up example to simplify your real data, but how many columns of data do you have in your real file? If it is only the 4 columns that you show here, then a multiple-IF formula would suffice - would that be okay ?

    Hi Pete,

the "real" problem has 57 columns and about 16k rows.

Basically, I want to figure out if there is a way to detect all filled cells in a "1 row times n columns" list and give back the "position" of filled cells.

If you have 57 columns then the approach that I was thinking of will be too cumbersome.

You could probably do it using TEXTJOIN, but I don't have that function in my version of Excel, so I can't try it out for you.
