    sorting causes SUM total to change

    Hello,

    in my simple excel doc attached, I have my original data in column A with a SUM that exactly equals ($34.99)....but when I sort the data the sum total changes depending on how it is sorted and will never again equal ($34.99). Why is that and how can I fix it?

    Welcome to the wacky world of floating point arithmetic. At it's simplest, Excel can't count!!

    So. Are those tiny, tiny differences of ANY significance? No. So, ROUND your result

    =ROUND(SUM(A3:A10000),4)

    ... to 4 dps, say. More thna enough for most purposes. Now sort your data.
