Vlookup column index number keeps changing when table expands

How do i stop a Vlookup formula's column index number from changing when a table expands to include new data.

    =VLOOKUP('SHIFT REPORT'!$G$5:$G3838,'Drop Down Lists'!$G$2:$J$30,4,0)

The column index number (4) keeps changing to a 3 when the table expands.

    Hi randall,

The 4 changing to a 3 shouldn't happen. Can you supply an example workbook to show your claim from above?

It would help if you attached a sample Excel workbook, by following the details given in the yellow banner at the top of the screen - that way we could check things out directly. In the meantime, a few comments about your quoted formula:

The first parameter of the VLOOKUP function should be a single cell (e.g. 'SHIFT REPORT'!$G5 ) rather than a range of cells. For the 3rd parameter, you could use a MATCH function to match on the column headings directly.

    Hope this helps.

Can't see why that would happen. 4, in this case is/should be constant.

Please attach a sample workbook (not a picture or pasted copy). Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and then scroll down to Manage Attachments to open the upload window.
