Lookup formula: bring back the closest number and convert it into a letter

    Hi all,

I am having a mind blank today. I want to use a formula that will bring back the closest number and convert it into a letter (normally use vlookup or lookup but it doesn't seem to want to work for me today)

I have attached an example of what I need. The data is one tab and the data I want it to look up is on the 2nd Tab

For example, if Column/Row D2 has a mark of between 7 and 13 it will bring a number "1" into column/row E2 etc

Sorry if I am rambling. I'm not very good at explaining.

    Thank you in advance

    Clare

    Re: Lookup formula help

For your vlookup you want the value in column B ascending thats why you are struggling. if sorted the other way round something like
    =VLOOKUP(D2,boundry!B3:C8,2,1)

    should work

    Re: Lookup formula help

    Hi,

Reverse the order of your boundary table so that rows B3:B7 are in ascending order then use

    =VLOOKUP(D2,boundry!$B$3:$C$8,2)

Incidentally your data validation is set to a maximum of 40 so you could never get a 5 as it stands
