    #spill! error

i have attached an excel spreadsheet based on up todate MS Business Office

Migrate to R36C16 That cell should be have the text "Food" in it.

My problem is totally within the section of food from range R37C13:R40:C32

in column 18 you will see the cell error #spill!

If you go to "forumla" tab and select evaluate forumula, you will see that the evaluation of the formula does select the correct values but when it
does a division, the error surfaces.

I am baffled as to where the "overlap" is that the error refers to.

    please help me.

    Merged cells strike again!
All joking aside this is why myself and many others always dissuade people from using the merged cell options as it really can mess with your formulas results. for formatting try using the alignment tab under cell format and use the option "CENTER ACROSS SELECTION".

But to fix the spill just remove the merged cells.

Thank you for such a fast response.I have no idea what a merged cell is.
If i have a merged cell it was unintentional.

Please help me understand what it is and I will look for it in the future
    if it appears again.

    also.
how do i just "remove" it?

    thank you once again.

    Re: #spill! error

Oh Oh 0h. I looked up "merged" and suddenly understood.

I have been using merged cells forever.
so i am looking for a way to replace that option.

i often have individual numbers on the right and a sum of them
to their left. if i had an odd number of rows, I would just place
the sum in the middle row. if i have an even number of rows my sum
    is not centered.

how do you address this issue

    Re: #spill! error

highlight the cells where you want the text to center across.
Then right click and Select "Format Cells.
    Select Alignment Tab.
Under Horizontal Select "Center Across Selection".
    Hit OK

    Re: #spill! error

    Thank you for being patient.

I definitely saw the center across selection in the horizontal selection.
    BUT
center across selection is not in the vertical selection. My problem is occuring when I attempt to merge vertically, not horizontally
    i will try it anyway...

the calculation math does work with center across selection, but the value is placed in the upper most cell of the four rows.

at least i am half way there.

now to find a way to emulate center across vertical selection.
