    Match lookup functions

How do I solve this problem if I need to pick up electives passed from table 1 to the highlighted (gray) cells G10 and I10? As there is no single choice of electives, the cell reference for lookup is not working. Rather, I need to check the whole list of electives on the right, check which electives the students studied, and only pick up the passed ones as attached.

    Welcome to the forum.

There are instructions at the top of the page explaining how to attach your sample workbook (yellow banner: HOW TO ATTACH YOUR SAMPLE WORKBOOK). Screenshots are of little practical use as we cannot manipulate them.

A good sample workbook has just 10-20 rows of representative data that has been desensitised. It also has expected results mocked up, worked examples where required, relevant cells highlighted and a few explanatory notes.

    Re: Match lookup functions

It is a real shame that you don't have Excel 2021 or, better, 365, as this would be super easy.

    For Excel 2019:

    In I10:

    =LOOKUP(2,1/(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("Elect",A2:A18))=TRUE),A2:A18)

    In G10:

    =LOOKUP(2,1/((ISNUMBER(SEARCH("Elect",A2:A18))=TRUE)*(A2:A18<>I10)),A2:A18)

    In H4 copied down:

    =LOOKUP(2,1/($A$2:$A$18=G4),$C$2:$C$18)

    In J4 copied down:

    =LOOKUP(2,1/($A$2:$A$18=I4),$C$2:$C$18)

    Re: Match lookup functions

Thank you so much. It works well. Your suggestion uses "Elect" to search for a string consisting of Elect. Then the lookup function checks for a pass or not. I have one question. How do I perform the same if the elective modules have distinct names? And each student may choose different electives.

    Re: Match lookup functions

If the real data is different in format to the sample data, then a different approach may be necessary. I can't work with what I can't see - only with what you provide.

Provide a more realistic sample set of data and I'll see what I can do.

Are you still using Excel 2019?

EDIT: In the light of your cross posting, I am reluctant to spend any more time on this, as I see you are getting help elsewhere.

Oh Sorry, I didn't know the rule. Thanks for advising me and sharing my post from mrexcel.com.
