Complicated Counting Function

Hey Everyone,

I'm super comfortable with excel but have met my match with this one.

I am trying to get excel to count the number of times something appears in a cell range.

For example if I had the following sheet

a - b - c - d
1 - Mon - Tue - Wed - Thur
2 - Bob - sam - sam - bob
3- bob - sam - sam - sam
4 - sam - bob - bob - bob

so above bob appears 6 times. Is there a formula that can tell me that. Something like countx(a1:d4,"bob") i no countx doesn't exist but I figured this would help you with what I am looking for. I tried dcount but couldn't figure out how to make it work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
