change column heading into a drop down box

I need to change the column heading from a letter to a drop down list box which contains information from the entries in the column. For example: Let's say that column "D" contains a single surname in each cell. There are 10 Smiths', 12 Jones', and 8 Williams'. I would like to replace the completely unhelpful letter "D" at the top of the column with a drop down box which, when opened, lists Smith, Jones, and Williams once each. The idea being that I could click on one of the names and jump to the section of the column where that name occurs.

That probably won't happen, you may want to check out data validation
