Search multiple columns and return heading

I found the following formula on another website after much searching. I thought this would be a more common problem.

Its purpose is to search multiple columns and return the column heading where the match was found. It works as advertised, but I would like to alter it a bit to allow for partial matches. I tried editing it to the following to only check the first 3 characters, but it does not seem to recognize the wildcard.

Attached is an example worksheet. Thanks in advanced for the help.
P.S. The end of the formula

seems to serve no purpose, it just subtracts 1 and then adds 1 from what I can tell. Am I correct in thinking that doesn't need to be there? I wasn't sure if it was there for some reason I cannot see.

I did some further searching and found the SUMPRODUCT does not accept wildcards. Does anyone know of a way to do this a different way?

    Hi Catsup,

See the attached which is much easier to me than trying to do an Array Formula or Index match. See if it works for you.

Awesome, thanks! I have almost no knowledge of VB, but I suspected it might be the way to go.
