How To Vlookup On Duplicate Values But Only Return The First

I have a problem that is probably easy to solve, but I am having trouble and only the experts here can help me.

I have a list of values that I am doing a vlookup against. Some of the values repeat, but I only want to see the first one. The reason being that I am summing or counting the returned values. For example:

    Values Return
    ABL345 22
    EBA123 7
ABL345 22 <- Don't want to see this one as it has already been returned
    YUI743 13

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Try on these lines..

    =IF(COUNTIF($A$1:a1,a1)>1,"",vlookup(your formula....))

    copy down

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

Can't you just delete the duplicates before doing vlookup?

It may be easier if you highlight column A, click on Data, and click on remove duplicate.

Re: How To Vlookup On Duplicate Values But Only Return The First

I have been following the forum for a while, and got solutions to many problems, but never posted anything until today.

Unfortunately, I cannot delete the the duplicates as there is a reason that there are duplicates on the source table and that table gets updated frequently. There are many work-arounds, but I wanted to get to a formula that would handle it instead of having to create additional tables or deleting values, etc.

Thanks fo the quick reply and suggestion, but the formula omits all entries where there is more than 1 and not just the ones greater than 1.

Nevermind, Ace_XL, I was wrong. I had placed the $ correctly. Your formula worked perfectly. Thank you.
