I have different people in an org chart on excel that have hyperlinks to a range of cells on a different sheet showing data. is there a way to make that range of cells highlight when it takes me there from clicking on the hyperlink, but not highlight if i just go to that sheet directly?

If you make the Hyperlink refernce to an entire RANGE of cells, clicking that hyperlink will take you to that range and SELECT it all, so it's sort of highlighted, but not with color, with a selection range.
For instance, when creating the hyperlink, instead of putting a single target cell in the "Type the cell reference" box, type a range instead:
