IF Statement If Between these dates = this

Hello,

I'm trying to do a IF formula so that IF this date range between "May 1, 2012" and "May 1, 2013" that it = 1, this relates to year one of a sort of agreement, I also need it for other date ranges as well, so I need a multi if statement that also goes if between May 1, 2013 and May 1, 2014 = 2, and 3, and so on.
I tried doing it and I kept getting an error so I'm seeking for some help.

If you enter May 1, 2012 into A1, May 2, 2013 into A2, etc. and you have the date you want to compare in B1, see if this helps you get started:
