Hi Guys,
I'm new to this site and I'm not the greatest with excel but I've been plodding along with a new spreadsheet for my business and the 'COUNTIF' function isn't working. Can you help?

Calculation is set to Manual, when I change it to Automatic the formulas appear to work.
To do that goto the Formulas tab, Calculation Options>Automatic.

I presume you mean this formula:
=COUNTIF(C4:Q31,"*")
which is in cell T23 of your monthly sheets (you could have told us that !). That basically means count everything, but as your sheets are empty it returns zero, so the function is working correctly.
What is it that you are trying to do?

It was set to Automatic on my PC when I opened the file.

It's on manual when I open it (xl2010)

Strange, I didn't have any workbooks open when I opened the attachment directly from the link.
Ah well, the OP seems to have gone off-line now, and I'm going out soon, so I'll check back later to see if there have been any developments.

The Nori was correct and all is well. I'm not sure how it switched to manual? Thank you all for your swift replies.

Based on your last post in this thread, its apparent that you are satisfied with the solution(s) you've received and have solved your question, but you haven't marked your thread as "SOLVED". I will do it for you this time.
In future, to mark your thread as Solved, you can do the following -
Select Thread Tools-> Mark thread as Solved.
Incase your issue is not solved, you can undo it as follows -
Select Thread Tools-> Mark thread as Unsolved.
