how to fill in cell a1 with a number and have b1 automatically fill with different number

I don't know if you can help me or not, but thought I would give it a try! I do a lot of work in excel and can maneuver the program pretty well. What I can't figure out is HOW to do one thing...

Don't know how to visually show u what I am trying to do is but when I fill in cell A1 with 1 AND I would like for B1 to automatically fill in with the number 7. I'd like to have it done for numbers 1-6 and column b to automatically fill in with numbers from 7-1.. but I can't figure out if or how I can do that without having to do the placings in column A and going back to fill in points in column B.

If you can provide me with the direction on how to create this, I would really really appreciate it! Thanks in advance for all responses!

    Re: Need a little help

Your heading needs to be changed - it should describe what your problem is (see the Forum Rules at the top of the screen).

After you have done that, I can give you a simple formula to go into column B.

Thanks for changing the thread title. Here's a simpler formula in B1:

    =IF(A1="","",8-A1)

assuming A1 can only have the values from 1 to 7 (or be blank). Copy down as required.

    Hope this helps.

well- I guess it's not quite solved.. I have the 1-7 in different columns. what would I put for those numbers in say column D and the results to be put in E?

Been playing with your formula and haven't figured it out yet

Pete, I first was going to do something similar, but it does not account for the skipping of 2 in the data originally posted. If the 2 was intentional, then I think this addition to your formula will do it. It is definitely better than my solution.
