    Excel 2013 locking

I've spent 2 days trying to find out if my issue had already been answered. So if I missed it somehow, I'm sorry.

    Here's my issue:

I use 2 Excel spreadsheets. 1 is a list certain big jobs and the other is an employee timesheet. I change info in the cells themselves but NEVER the formatting. Light lines marking each cell with a heavy boarder on the outside of the entire working area.

Is there a way to lock the formatting ONLY?

Example: On the time sheet, I will drag the date from the top to bottom when the week changes. But that also drags the thick board with it which causes me to have to redo the boarders. I hope that made sense.

    I'm running Excel 2013

    Stacy

    Hi,

One easy option: instead of dragging the cell, please copy the cell to be copied (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+C), select the cell ranges to which it needs to be pasted, Paste Special -> Values. This will avoid any formatting to be copied to the destination cells.

But dragging it will change the days of the week and date automatically. Coping it will set it as the same date/day. I know this is a petty issue, it's just very annoying.

    Re: Excel 2013 locking

    4/30/2014 Wednesday
    5/1/2014 Thursday
    5/2/2014 Friday
    5/3/2014 Saturday

These are in cells. If I drag, they will change the dates and day all the way through the month.

Alternatively, drag the date and day range in a new excel sheet, then copy and paste special -> values into your current workbook.

That's what I'm doing. The issue I want to stop is having to reform the lines between the cells. I have a thin line between cells and the entire worksheet has the thick line. When dragging the date/days, it will redo those lines.

When you drag the date range in an unformatted new excel sheet (new workbook), it will not have any formatting. After dragging, please copy the whole range, and Paste Special - Values into your current workbook. This way you avoid formatting your current workbook again & again.

    Re: Excel 2013 locking

I'm sorry. Somewhere I've failed to properly explain my issue.

Even if I create a new spreadsheet, I have to change the date/days. I would have to change them one at a time or drag them. Dragging them will change the line formatting or in a new spreadsheet, I'd have to re-create the line formatting. Either way, that's what I want to avoid. I want to create a spreadsheets line formatting, lock that down and just change the data each month...preferably not cell by cell.

Type the start date at the top cell of your table, put a formula below +1 as mentioned in the attachment. Copy the second cell, Paste Special -> Formula till the end of the table. This will not change the formatting.

    Re: Excel 2013 locking

I opened your attachment. When I formatted the cells, it would do the same thing mine does or I'd have to change each cell individually. So that still isn't a fix, just a different way to format a running date/day which isn't what I'm talking about.

I'm sorry. I guess I'm not explaining myself very well. Thanks anyway.
