Excel won't open the file when I double click on it

I recently uninstalled microsoft office 2007 32 bit and then downloaded microsoft office 2010 64 bit.

When I click on my documents and then double click any file that is not an excel file it opens up.

When I click on my documents and then double click an excel file, the circle load symbol flashes for a split second then nothing happens.

If I open up excel, then click open, find the document I want and click on it, then it will open the file.

If I create a new file and save it as an excel file, then try to double click on it, it will not open.

If I create a new file and save it as a macro enabled workbook, then try to double click on it, it WILL open.

All of them are saved as .xlsx files.

When I right click and go to open with... there is no option to open the files with excel. When I browse for excel, I find the program and click open, excel won't go on the open with screen.

    Any advice????

If you are using Windows 2007 or 2012 try hitting the Start button the Default Programs. Then choose Associate a File Type or Protocol with a Program. Click on Current Default, scroll down to see if all the major file extensions for Excel are associated with Excel. If you find that they are not, correct the associations.
