Linking Data / Refreshing Existing Connections Issue

    Hello everyone,

    I'm running Excel 2013.

In a nutshell, what I have are two spreadsheets. One is a master diary of events that's taking place in a building. The second is a weekly events sheet. I'm trying to link the master diary to the weekly event sheet so it's automatically populated with the data from the master diary, therefore meaning if the master diary is changed, whenever the weekly events file is opened, that data will refresh automatically.

The problem i'm having is - whenever I make a connection to the master diary from the weekly events file, it opens a read-only copy of the master diary along side it, even if I tell it to put the data into a new table within the weekly events sheet.

Also, even if I close the read-only copy of the master diary, whenever I press 'Refresh Connections' it re-opens a read-only copy again!

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Please accept my apologies if I've been vague - I can clarify anything if you're not sure.

    Thanks in advance

Can you properly open other files located in the same folder without them being read only?

Yes, but the master diary is password protected, but surely I can create a read-only connection and still use the data? It literally has to be a one way connection.

    Thanks,

    Wes

It sounds like you have created a workbook and password protected it but allowed read only in sharing protected by a password. If that is the case, I believe that you have to enter all the passwords, do your editing and re-protect the workbook. I was used to a different system where I had a private folder where I was the only one with read/write privileges to the contents and then exported data to a semi-public folder (a folder with access restricted to a limited number of individuals) where everyone with access, except me, had read only privileges.

Your IT manager should be able to help you out with this.
