Conditional Formatting - Colour a cell that does not contain a word

    Hi all,

    I'd appreciate your help.

I'm a beginner at Excel and I can't seem to figure out how to Conditional Format a cell that does not contain a specific word. In my scenario I have group of cells which contain variations of word Yes (which I know how to conditional format) but all other cells (which contain a variety of words) I cannot seem to format all in the same colour.

Basically, I want to colour all cells that don't contain the word Yes in the colour red.

    Can anyone help me?

    Kind regards,
    Gareth

Re: Conditional Formatting - Colour a cell that does not contain a word

    Thanks for the quick responses!

Hi zbor,I'm bit of a beginner when it comes to excel, where do I copy and paste that formula to?

And hi udprocks, attached is an example. Rather than conditioning cells with Yes in, I've currently got a conditional format whereby any cells containing the word Over is coloured green (there are a couple of different variations of cells containing the word Over in the attached file). I would ideally as well want any cell that doesn't contain the word Over to turn red).

    Thanks again!

Re: Conditional Formatting - Colour a cell that does not contain a word

    It's called Conditional Formatting.

Go to Home -> Conditional Formatting

    and there you have
    • New Rule (for adding new rule)
    • Manage rules (for manage existing rules)

If you go to Manage rules you will see this one there.
You can edit it and that's where formula goes (in case you want to edit something).

This example should help you out. The formula in Conditional Formatting is this which is looking at column C and formatting all words that are not YES with the colour RED

    Formula: copy to clipboard
