insert header/footer causes split

excel 2007, when I insert a header/footer, it splits the sheet, if its the default new sheet it splits after column j, so its trying to make sheets about 7" wide. How do I stop this behavior???
If I widen some columns then columns to right get pushed into the 'split' second sheet to the right.
I have used other versions of excel that don't do this, and my version 2007, did not do this until all of sudden today
This is some parameter setting somewhere?

ok found it, its the page layout box bottom of page on right, there's 3 boxes there, normal, page layout, and page break preview, must have hit the page layout button at some point. just never really noticed those, kinda scary after all the time I have spent with excel.
