Hi. I'm having problems creating a drop down list with entries containing both numbers and spaces. I know how to use the substitute function for spaces. An example of an entry will be like this: 11 Avvik fra standard. (In Norwegian) Excel 2010 obviously doesn't understand this and creates an error message. Anyone who knows how to fix this problem? Thanks!

i don't understand what's wrong. If I understand you correctly, the attached sheet will show that htere's no probem. If I've misunderstood (or even if I haven't misuderstood) can you attach a sample worksheet clearly showing the problem?

Thanks for you're reply. I'm not too fluent in Excel lingo, so maybe I was a bit unclear. My object is too create a form for bridge inspections. In my department we have a manual that describes each part of a bridge, each cause of damage, each type of damage and so forth in a code hierarchy. For example a cause of damage is described with code 4: Lack of maintenance. This code has several entries like code 44: damage from snow removal. I create lists, and then with data validation and the indirect(substitute function I am able to create drop down list who are dependant on each other. As you can see in shet one in my example. The original lists are in sheet two. These entries does not contain any codes in front of the code description. But in sheet 4 i did exatcly the same thing with the code in front of the description. And now it doesn't work. Any suggestions what to do? It's really important that the form has these codes in it for documentation purposes. Thanks in advance!example.xlsx
Names can't begin with a number. I have modified it for you. I changed two things - the Data Validation formula in B1 and the names of the named ranges in Ark 2 (e.g. B2:B4)

Hi. Sorry for asking again, but I encountered another problem. Tried to google but no answers. Now I'm struggeling with another. Now I'm describing different parts of the bridge in a 3 level codehierarchy: The code starts with a letter followed by either one or two numbers. I've created and saved all the lists, so if you know how to get the same result as my last example, i would be really grateful. Thanks and happy easter!
A simple mistake. The named range can't contain spaces - that you knew. However, in the data validation you were removing the space, while the named ranges replaced the space with an underscore. I changedd the DV to substitute a space with an underscore and it seems OK now.

Hi again. In cell B4 everything is fine, but the next "level" in cell C4 is not working. An example: If i choose in A4 "D overbygning", and in B4 "D2 Bjelke", i want to be able to choose from all the options in column N in sheet two.

That's because I didn't go that far - the original query was about numbers & spaces. I'll take a look.
OK. I tried to change the _C1_Landkar ro C1_Landkar, but it didn't like that (not sure why); so I changes all of the teriary named references to begin with an underscore. Then, the formula in the data validation for the tertiary level had to be amended to put an underscore i at the start, as well as substituting underscores for spaces. The it worked fine, except for the subsidiary list for H4. It wouldn't work because of the hyphen. So, I added another substitute intot he Data Validation formual for the tertiary level and it STILL wouldn't work. Finally, I spotted that someone (you/me: who cares...) had mis-spelled Utstyr in the Named Range. It's fixed now and maybe.... everything is good to go.
This is really fantastic. The task was maybe i little bit too ambitious for a guy with almost no Excel experience. My brother always tell me you can do everything in Excel, and it seems he's right.
