I used to use “Accounting" format with parenthesis for negative numbers. It seems like that format has now disappeared. I have Excel for Mac 14.5.1. Am I missing something?

I'm not using a Mac, but if you want the formatting with parenthesis, the following number formatting (Ctrl+1 > Custom) would do the trick:
_(* #,##0_);_(* (#,##0);_(* "-"_);_(@_)
I don't have 2013 but experimenting a bit produced this which has the $ sign at the left of the cell, and () around negative values.
If you want only () for negative values $* #,##0.00;$* (#,##0.00)
If you want a - inside the () $* #,##0.00;$* (-#,##0.00)
If you want a - outside the () $* #,##0.00;$* -(#,##0.00)
If you don't want the $ aligned at the left of the cell $#,##0.00;$(#,##0.00)

On 2010, I just used "Accounting". I have 2013 at home, will look there too, but I dont see why thy would remove a popular format like that
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools

I have Office 2011 for Mac, but as earlier members say, I wouldn't see why it is gone.
1) Highlight the cells you want to format.
2) On the toolbar at the top, click "Format" -> "Cells".
3) Click "Accounting", and then "Ok".
Here are some examples of currency format with accounting format beside to show the difference: the formatting code for Custom Formatting is under the examples.

I have just tested 2013, and it too, has the accounting format, so perhaps you overlooked it in your version?
From searching for info on this topic, it appears that there is a bug using Office 2011 and the Yosemite version of OS X that makes the parenthesis for accounting and currency styles go away. There is no known fix that I can find. People suggest adding custom number format to add the parentheses, but you have to do that separately on each spreadsheet you open, which is hardly ideal. If you open a spreadsheet that has numbers formatted the way you want, you can use the format painter to copy that format to other cells.
I was having the same problem when I added Excel for Windows in a parallels virtual machine on the same Mac, but fortunately, I was able to correct it in control panel under the language and region settings. The language and regions setting on Apple system preferences, doesn't give you any option for formatting negative numbers. My region settings are set properly for United States so that isn't the problem. I'm a CPA so this is a major pain point for me. I wish Microsoft and/or Apple would fix it. It's been noted as a problem since Yosemite was launched back in October 2014.
Thanks Taxman and other folks. Not the answer I was hoping for but it is what it is.
I took your suggestion to open up an older spreadsheet where I had used Accounting and Parentheses. I saved this using “Template” for a filename. Now I just have to remember to start new spreadsheets with this file. What a pain.
One bit of good news: I found that in these older spreadsheets the code for Accounting and Parentheses formatting is in the Custom dropdown list. It is easily recognizable and can be used to quickly setup Accounting and Parentheses formatting when adding a new worksheet.
