I need to have an item description include a footnote reference which should be in superscript. That reference number will vary depending on how many footnoted items are included. If I use concatenated text, I don't think it will let me change the font for only the footnote reference. Is there a way to make only one part of the resulting text in a cell have font that is superscript?

If the text is in the footer (applies to header also) select the text that you want to be superscript and then go to the Font group on the Home tab, expand it and select superscript. This also applies to text formed by concatenation if you select the text, copy it and paste values. That makes the text available for editing in the same manner as described.
