Colour Cells that show weekends

Hi I have a calendar that contains the date in one column and the second column indicate the day. column A Row 1 has the date in ddmmyyy format (01/01/2016) and in column B Row 1 there is a formula (=A1) formatted to ddd to show the week day. What I am trying to achieve is to highlight the cells that are the weekends, I have tried a conditional format but have been unable to get it to work.

Hello,

you can use a conditional format with a formula. In the formula you can use the Weekday function, like =Weekday(A1). With no additional parameters it returns 1 for Sunday and 7 for Saturday. There are parameters for different settings. For example =Weekday(A1,2) returns 1 for Monday through to 7 for Sunday.

So in your conditional formatting formula you could use

=weekday(A1,2)>5

If the weekday is greater than 5 then it is a weekend.
