    Excel links to Word documents

    Hi,

I have a Word document which is linked with excel paste special > paste link > picture). I have emailed that file to outside my office but they can't open the Word file as Word is searching for Excel. The links are on manual update (not auto) and shouldn't probably search for Excel. Please could someone let me know what i'm doing wrong?

    thanks,
    Farhan

    Hi Farhan,

Since you have linked your word document to an Excel file which is with you and the person who is sitting outside of your office, can't access to this file at that moment. As Word would be looking to open Excel file in order to open a file for you. If you send that Excel file along with Word file in one folder, this problem should not be there.

Note, I haven't tried this earlier but you can give a try once.

    Thanks,
    Anil

That won't work unless the files are saved to a folder with exactly the same path as on the originating machine. That's because Word stores the explicit path for the link.

Farhan: Although you say "The links are on manual update (not auto)", all it takes is one faulty one to ruin that. Get the recipient to uncheck Word's 'Update automatic links at open' option (File|Options|Advanced>General). Also, if the recipient has Word's 'Update linked data before printing' option checked (File|Options|Display) and tries to print the file, that will cause the same kind of problems.
