    Missing Font colors ??

I have written a weather program that list the temperature and wind data using the conditional formatting to change font colors in different ranges. Its worked perfectly for several years but recently has stopped changing colors.
If I look at a "print preview" the colors are there but don't appear on the screen when observing the program.
Any suggestions to what could have been changed to make it impossible to see font colors ???
I believe there is a command that I hit by mistake that is causing this to occur??

    Re: Missing Font colors ??

It would help if you could post a copy of the workbook!

Without seeing the data, I can only assume that you have exceeded the range to which the CF applies.

Are you really using XL2003? I can't remember how to correct the CF range in that version - a lot has changed since the ribbon was introduced for XL2007+

I hope this helps, please let me know!

    Regards,

    David

Please remember, your request is clearer if you attach a sample workbook.

    Hi Dave:
I have a 2003 Excel. Don't see "XL" any where. The program is a little over 500K. Could that be the problem ??

    Hi roehrie,

No, the attachment didn't work. Can you try again?

Just click on Reply and down the bottom you will see three buttons. Click Go Advanced. You then need to scroll down to see the Your Message window, and click the Paper Clip.

You will then see the File Upload Manager window. Click the Add Files button and select your file.

    Hope this helps,

    Regards,

    David

BTW the file size shouldn't be an issue at 500K.

    Hi Dave:
Follow your instructions and when I clip on the paper clip a very narrow window opens and I can't write in it. I looked all over the page and can't find anything about attachments, Another thing I can't understand is when I edit my Macro1 I don't see the software instructions for CF but when I look at "Print View"
the text is colored like I had programed.

    Hello Roehrle,

Unfortunately, I can't see what you see, but I can hazard a guess.

Perhaps when you click on the paper clip, the window that pops up is minimized somehow. If you hover the mouse over the lower border, you should see an arrow with two heads appear - left click, and drag down. On my screen the window occupies about a quarter of the screen!

    Regards,

    David

    Re: Missing Font colors ??

    Hi Dave:
I think that maybe because I am using Excel 2003 it is
causing my problem??I have been on many forums over the
years and this has been the craziest one I have ever used.
This message I am now writing seem to be in a primitive
basic form that I haven't been able to rectify. When I
finish writing the message and hit "Preview Post"to check what I
have written it appears to be OK. If I click on the
attachment key, this is what happens....nothing,
I appreciate your help but I think I am going to spent
the next couple of days trying to figure out why this
format the forum is using is so much different in what

I am used to. Thanks for your help so far. I'll try to
get back to you if I can get my problem solved.

    Re: Missing Font colors ??

As I said before, it is a number of years since I used XL2003.

Since you can't master the attachment thing, let me make an alternate suggestion! As I recall, this is what you will need to do. I think the problem has something to do with the range you applied the CF to, so:

Select a cell where the Conditional Formatting is working, and COPY (I use Ctrl+C) the cell.

Now go to the first cell where it STOPS working, and select all the cells you want to change.

Right Click and select Paste Special... then click the Formats radio button. This will copy the formatting to the cells which are currently not showing the colour you expect to see.

As to the rest of your comments, I don't think the site is crazy, but agree it takes a bit of getting used to. I like it because you can attach workbooks which makes understanding user issues so mush easier. Other sites where you can't attach workbooks, can take a lot of back and forth to understand the issues!

I usually type my message in the Reply window, then go to the Advanced window to do the attachment.

You have to click on the paperclip while you are in the Go Advanced window.

When you click on the Reply button, you see what you type in a more "normal" format. When you go to the Advanced section, you are going "behind the scenes" to the HTML version. This is why it looks "primitive". It isn't really!

I hope this helps, please let me know!

    Regards,

    David

    Re: Missing Font colors ??

    Hi Dave:
I think I finally found a way to send an attachment.
If you receive my workbook go to the "print view" to see
if you can see the colored font like I can. All the colors
are in the print view but not when I run the program like it
    use to do.
Maybe my "crazy" was the wrong word.. un-usually may have been
    better choice.

    Re: Missing Font colors ??

    Hi again,

Well done - I now have the attachment!

I was able to open it on a machine that still has Excel 2003, but I can't see the issue you seem to be referring to.

On screen, I can see data for the last few days, listing about every 6 minutes, all the way down to row 489.

For some reason, there is data missing for the last 7 or 8 rows. When I open it and activate the macro, these rows represent April 6 from 21:48. The file you sent me, before the macro was activated, had missing data in the same last few row.

All the cells are coloured, and I can see the Conditional Formatting rules in all cells - right down to the bottom (row 489).

When I look at the Print Preview, I also see all the cells showing the colours - they look the same as on the screen.

So I'm afraid I can't help yet because I can't see the issue you are referring to.

Can you point me to a specific cell that is "wrong" and tell me how it should behave?

    Regards,

    David

    Re: Missing Font colors ??

    Hi Dave:
If I got your reply right , you found that the date was changing color when you opened the workbook. I think this means that the problem is on my end. Something is causing the color to stop working. I must have changed something on my computer that is causing this and not a problem with my program.
As far as the last couple rows that you talked about is caused by the buoy data for some unknown reason stops working for a short period. If I go back and download the data after 10 or 15 minutes the data will show up.
I retired back in 1990 and bought a sailboat and every year I sailed on the Delaware River. I wrote this program for the wind data which is very important for a sailor. The weather buoy is a mile from my mooring location on the river. The data helps me decide if I go out sailing or not.
BTW the editor that was in a primitive mode is working great today..go figure.
Thanks for your help and if you think of what I might have done to cause my computer to stop presenting the color info it would be appreciated.

    Re: Missing Font colors ??

I am also retired, but only since 2011! I moved to the country and now have a 50 acre small farm!

Can't explain what is going on - somehow your macro is not executing.

Try clicking on Alt+F11 to access the VBA program. Go to Module1 and you will see your Sub auto_open() macro. Click anywhere in this and them hit F5.

This should execute the macro. If not, your macros have somehow been switched off. (I'll have to do some research into how to fix that - I can't remember for XL2003.

By the way, the auto_open is a quite old VBA method. It is more efficient to use a workbook event in the This Workbook section, and use Workbook_Open()

    David

    Re: Missing Font colors ??

    Hello again,

I've had a quick look at your file.

Here is a new version - instead of going through all the formatting of cells every time, I copy the data to the download tab, and get your data from there on the River Data tab. A lot quicker I think.

There is also a button to click to refresh the data.

At the moment, it does not refresh when you open the file, but if you want it to, just go into the This Workbook section in the Macros and delete the quote mark next to GetData. The text will change from green to black. Save the file, and it should run when you open it.

You can still use the button to refresh.

    Regards,

    David

    Re: Missing Font colors ??

    Hi David:
I like and appreciate the changes you made but don't understand exactly what you did. I am very busy now working on filling out my US taxes for 2015 that I have to get ready by Apr 15th. Just spent all day yesterday putting in our mooring field with temperatures in the low 30's. After taxes I have to get my sailboat ready for launching in the next couple of weeks. This means I'll be very busy for a while and won't have the time to try to resolve the problems with my program. If it is OK with you I would like to put this topic on hold for a couple of weeks when I have more time to spend on finding my problem. So I'll try to get back to you in a couple of weeks when I have more time to spend on this problem. Thanks a lot for your help so far and I hope to hear from you again when I have the time .

    Bob

No worries Bob - just add to this thread when you're back on deck (excuse pun) and we can talk about the changes I made.
