The cell's formula bar expands over needed adjacent cells when entering formula

    Hi All,

I have searched and searched but, cannot find a logical answer to my problem!

I am trying to enter a SUMIF formula into cell C4 with the criteria being in cell B4; cell C4 does not need to be very big at all because, I am expecting only a single digit to return after the SUMIF formula.

However, on this and many other occasions I am getting frustrated by the cell's formula bar (not the formula bar at the top) as, it expands and overlaps adjacent cells when I enter in large formulas.

Is there away in which to stop this from happening? I really don't know why it needs to happen at all because, there is a perfectly good formula bar at the top of the page in which to see what you are entering. (It is useful on occasion I know, I am just frustrated about this issue)

Preferably, I would like the cell to look like =SUM...... and just show what will fit into my small cell, with the rest of the formula being followed and entered in the top formula bar.

I have just Signed up to this site in the last few moments and would appreciate greatly if anyone can help me.

    Hello welcome to the forum.

If you select the cell you wish to enter the formula you can then click in the top formula bar and type your formula there, nothing is then obscured. Alternatively, you can use the 'Insert Function' option on the Formula's tab.

I don't know of any way of avoiding what you describe when typing directly into the cell.

    Hi DBY,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I cannot believe I never thought to do that and doing as you suggested brings about the results I require, so thank you again.

I feel that a function that allows you to click on the cell itself and bring about the same result would be a worthwhile addition but, I am probably in the wrong forum for that!

    Kind Regards,

Glad to have helped a little. I too have had that frustration when formulas obscure the cells I want to reference.
