    Set default date format

I realize that this has probably been asked many times before, but I have not been able to find a satisfactory answer by searching.

When I export a query from Microsoft Access 2010 and there are dates in the query to be transferred, they are in the normal USA short date format: m/d/yy. However, when the transferred query opens up in Excel the dates are in the format d-mmm-yy. For example, 6/16/94 will appear *** 16-June-94. I want them to stay in the format as in Access. I have checked my global settings in the control panel and it is the format I want. I have checked the settings in Excel and the first date format when you click on date formats appears as I want it.

I know that the user can manually change the format, and I have seen some solutions with using macros, but then you have to save the default opening blank workbooks as macro enabled, something I do not want to do.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

    Re: Set default date format

    Hi There,

I don't think so that it is possible without VBA in Excel. Since, you want to Excel to convert the format forcefully in case that is not as per your requirement. It is not only about changing the format but also the way the data has been entered.

Let's say for US format, the data entered 4/14/16 i.e. April 14, 2016 which is m/d/yy and now in other file the dates are stored as d/mm/yy which in this case would be 14/4/16. So changing only format would not take in place.

For temp solutions, you can use customize formulas or as you mentioned, you can go with Macro and then to open a workbook as macro enabled.
    Thanks,

    Re: Set default date format

Thank you for your reply. The only question remains is why Excel insists on having that format [16-June-94] instead of the widely used [6/14/94]. And why won't they permit a user to set a default format.

    Re: Set default date format

How are you getting the data into Excel?

Are the date values correct and it's just the formatting that's the problem?

    Re: Set default date format

The dates in the query in Access are 4/14/15 for June 14, 2015. I use the standard Vba code in excess to export the query results to a file in the standard Excel format (Excel 2010) then open up the file.

So it just the formatting in Excel that is the problem. Excel seem to prefer 4-June-15, which by he way, hardly anyone uses.
