Totaling a group of rows by the name of the person

Hello,

I at one point in time actually did this. It may have been with someone's help here. I don't remember.

What I am trying to do for several sheets is I will have a list of a person and project they are assigned -- Mike -- Project A, etc. I would like to the right a total for all the users and a count of the projects they are assigned:
The spreadsheets were created already with the cell containing the person's name and project separated by " -- ". I can't change the sheet to have a Name column and a Project column.

Can what I want to do actually be done?

Thank you,
Mike

This formula entered in D2 and copied down:

=COUNTIF(A:A,C2&"*")

The people are not static. Meaning they could change. Could the CountIf somehow go through Col A and determine who the people are with the projects? For example, for different departments, Person A and Person B might be assigned to projects. However, in a different department, there could be 5 people.

Thank you for the quick response.

I'm not following you.

Instead of counting by a persons name you want to count by project? Count of Project A would be 3.

Please upload a sample of your workbook, not a picture of your data. Pictures are pretty much impossible to edit, and no-one wants to re-type your data for you
Also, not all members can upload picture files (Company firewalls and stuff) - and, depending on what browser is being used, some pics dont even show up on the forum

Your workbook should show a small desensitized example of the data you are working with and a manual mockup of the expected results.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Basically, I am looking for a Pivot Table that will use the values of the Project column up to the " -- " (the names of the person)

Thank you

I downloaded your file and it looks exactly like your screencap.

Still don't know what you want to do with this.

If you want to take that data and make a pivot table out of it I can't help you. I never use pivot tables.
